Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines
Every November, National Children’s Month is celebrated in commemoration of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which was adopted in November 1989. This law emphasizes the rights of children to be protected from various forms of violence. It addresses the challenges and concerns affecting children, and this month gives us the opportunity to reflect on their status, well-being, and the situations they face today. Violence against children has been one of the biggest problems in the Philippines. Many adults do not stop to think before taking harmful actions toward children, causing them emotional and physical pain. Isn't the pain caused by violence enough evidence that children are suffering? Why would anyone hurt a child who hasn't done anything wrong? Violence is a huge issue—a problem that remains unsolved by many, including those in higher positions. We must consider the long-term consequences for children who experience violence. After all, life is short. Let children enjoy their youth while they still can.
“Break the prevalence, end the violence.” This phrase calls for action, urging people to stand up for children's rights to be protected from harm. Ending violence requires more than just one person taking action—it demands collaboration among families, communities, government agencies, and organizations. Raising awareness alone is not enough; we must implement long-term measures to prevent, address, and rehabilitate children who have been abused. The phrase “Protecting Children” emphasizes the importance of creating a safe space for children, free from harm and abuse.
The theme also envisions a future where children can grow up in an environment that fosters their development and well-being, free from fear, violence, or exploitation. This vision is captured in the final section of the theme: “Creating a Safe Philippines.” Achieving this goal means addressing both the direct forms of harm and the root causes of violence, such as poverty, inequality, and limited access to healthcare and education. The theme for this year serves as a powerful reminder of the urgency and continuity of the fight to protect children. The call to action, “Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines,” invites everyone to contribute to building a society where children can grow up safe, supported, and with abundant opportunities.
Although we have made progress, much more remains to be done. It is time to end the cycle of violence and ensure that every Filipino child has the opportunity to lead a life full of promise, dignity, and freedom from fear. This National Children’s Month should serve as a turning point, inspiring greater dedication, collaboration, and compassion for our country's children.
Let’s keep our kids safe. Let’s make the Philippines a secure place for them.
