October is a specials month that marks the observance of the National Indigenous Peoples Month, a time to recognize the rich heritage and culture they’ve had for many years, and contributions of Indigenous people across the country. Every person has the rights to be protected against any violence regarding their culture and where they belong. One of them are the indigenous people. These people share collective ancestral ties to the lands and natural resources where they live, occupy or from which they have been displaced, that’s why they are called distinct social and cultural groups. They’re being protected by an act in which this act is an act to recognize, protect, and promote the rights of indigenous people and indigenous people and indigenous cultural communities, setting up mechanisms for implementation, appropriating funds for them, and other goals.
The National Indigenous Peoples Month 2024 highlights and celebrates their rich culture and tradition, promotes and stands up for their rights and lastly educates people about the solidarity they’ve done across the country. The theme underscores the importance of indigenous people, which includes about their contributions in agriculture and food security; their culture and customs and traditions woven in their natural environment and ancestral domains; and their leadership role in nation building. This supports the rights of indigenous people which means together as community, it strengthen their ties, to share their common values they’ve made, and reiterate their dedication to preserving their treasured traditions for future generations. The word “Katutubong Duno” talks about how knowledgeable indigenous people are. Indigenous people are known for their virtuous thinking, which they’ve used in preserving their rich culture and natural resources.
The observance urges more focus on developing policies that protect Indigenous communities' traditional ways of life while promoting their sustainable development. In order to develop more inclusive policies that directly address the needs and concerns of Indigenous peoples, it also promotes the development of stronger collaborations between the government, Indigenous groups, and social organizations. With the theme "Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan" the 2024 National Indigenous Peoples Month celebration is a strong statement of the significance of Indigenous peoples and their knowledge. It is an encouragement to all Filipino’s, to actively participate in the observance and preserving the traditions of Indigenous People. This event reminds us to value, nurture, and honor indigenous people throughout the year, not just the month of October. We can contribute to the creation of a more welcoming culture where the rights and contributions made by Indigenous peoples are valued and celebrated by advocating for the IPRA's full implementation, conserving Indigenous knowledge, and promoting greater cultural understanding.
